1077 Network First
First viewed : 22 March 1994
Network First was a new documentary strand on ITV , going out after News at Ten. As the name implies, it was not the property of any one company with all of them contributing individual programmes. The programmes were usually an hour's duration with breaks.
The Lusitania ( 22.3.94 )
This was a programme about the world's second most maritime disaster, the torpedo-ing of the Lusitania passenger liner off the Irish coast in 1915. It specifically examined the cause of the much-discussed second explosion following the torpedo hit, concluding that it was most likely the ignition of coal dust rather than hidden munitions which would have partially exonerated the Germans. The most powerful part of the programme was showing the photographs of some of the victims including young children dressed in Edwardian clothes who could conceivably still have been alive had they survived the sinking.
Nicholas and Alexandra ( 18.10.94 )
This documentary on the end of the Romanov dynasty was notable for being presented in a rather crusty manner by a distant relative, H.R.H. Prince Michael of Kent. The programme made liberal use of newly accessible Soviet archives and interviews with Romanov descendants but didn't really shed any new light on the tragic story.
Stalker Investigates ( 1.11.94 )
This documentary brought in former Deputy Chief Constable of Manchester, John Stalker, to re-investigate the death ten years earlier, of veteran peace campaigner Edith Murrell. Murrell's death came at the hands of burglars but were they MI5 agents as conspiracy theorists on the left suggested ? Stalker wasn't able to provide a definitive answer.
