1066 Hedda Gabler
First viewed : 27 November 1993
We move up the cultural scale now with BBC Two's adaptation of Ibsen's play about a bored woman who turns her ennui to destructive purposes in nineteenth century Scandinavia.
Hedda, played by Shakespearean actress Fiona Shaw, is married to George Tesman ( Nicholas Woodeson ) a dutiful dullard hoping for an academic promotion. His hopes are threatened by the return of Ejlert Lovborg ( Stephen Rea ), a dissolute scholar who has the brilliance he lacks. Hedda's jealousy of her friend Thea's ( Brid Brennan ) relationship with Lovborg leads her to a wanton act of destruction which rebounds on her and puts her at the mercy of her predatory confidante Judge Brack ( Donal McCann ).
Apart from Shaw not having the beauty the part calls for, this was a faithful production.
