1065 To Play The King
First viewed : 21 November 1993
This sequel followed straight on from the end of House of Cards and was set in the near future with Urquhart clashing with the new king ( Michael Kitchen ) , a well-meaning woolly liberal clearly based on Prince Charles. Princess Di and Fergie also appeared in threadbare disguises. This time round his young female foil is Sarah Harding ( Kitty Aldridge ) a policy wonk who's as right wing and obnoxious as he is but eventually blanches at the true nature of his villainy. The smoking gun of Mattie's tape rumbled on throughout the series.
It all seems very counterfactual now ; who would have thought that , a quarter of a century later, we'd still be waiting for Charles to ascend to his throne ?
While the central story was well-written, there were signs that the saga was heading in the wrong direction with the introduction of Nick Brimble as Corder the government's black ops man and the revelation that Urquhart's wife ( Diane Fletcher ) is as blackhearted as her spouse. It became hard to believe that this swerve into Ken Loach territory was coming from the pen of a Tory.
