1064 House of Cards
First viewed : 25 October 1993
I didn't see this first time round due to quiz duties. That was in November 1990 when it coincided by luck with the downfall o Margaret Thatcher. It was repeated in October 1993 prior to a second series continuing the saga. The series was adapted from a novel by a Tory party employee Michael Dobbs.
Ian Richardson played Francis Urquhart , the right wing Tory chief whip, who decides to undermine Thatcher's successor , the Major-ish Collingwood after being passed over for high office. Once that's accomplished, he moves into number 10 himself, stopping at nothing to achieve his ambitions including murder. His accomplices are pliant newspaper reporter Mattie ( Susannah Harker ) and the viewer as Urquhart regularly breaks the fourth wall to bring you into what he's planning. The series belatedly made Richardson a star and his catchphrase "You may think that, I couldn't possibly comment" entered common parlance although , conversely, no real politician could use it again.
The series made liberal use of Manchester Town Hall for the scenes set in the Commons and Mattie's final death plunge was from its roof.
We'll discuss the follow up series in due course.
