This was extremely gratifying viewing- a fly on the wall documentary following Depeche Mode on tour in America culminating in their triumphant gig at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. After years of derision, the band breaking America forced British writers to take them seriously. The tour was also captured by the film-maker Don Pennebaker as "101", hence the title.
I only watched this for the first time maybe a year ago, as it was on BBC4, and found it enjoyable to the degree I picked up the album the tour was promoting.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Depeche making sleevenotes out of various bad reviews for their "81>85" compilation deepened the antagonism from the music press? As someone else noted, needless to say, they had the last laugh.
